DPSOA Members:
Just a quick note to the DPSOA Membership to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. Although most of us will be working, helping to make the Texas roadways safer, I hope you will be able to spend some time with your families as well over this long holiday weekend.
I wanted to take a moment to thank Director Steve McCraw for having the vision and leadership to not only listen to the concerns expressed by our Association, but to take prompt and decisive action. DPSOA has pointed out the deficiencies at the Academy dormitories, and Friday, Col. McCraw, at the direction of the Public Safety Commission, closed the dorms for housing recruits and in-service personnel, and has moved the living arrangements off campus to a nearby hotel.
Col. McCraw, with the approval of the Public Safety Commission, took the DPSOA recommendation to provide law enforcement and traffic control through the presence of marked patrol vehicles and uniformed officers in TxDOT construction work zones. The Department is working with Executive Director Amadeo Saenz at TxDOT to provide solutions to other issues such as designated “crossover” pathways for emergency vehicles on highways that have the extended collision barrier cables installed and providing safely situated weigh stations and inspection areas for our troopers.
These are all changes that will benefit our troopers, and will provide a safer work environment.
Again, have a happy and safe holiday.
Brian Hawthorne
President, DPSOA
